Paying Attention – Your Weekly Inspirational Quote
News reports indicate that the BP well that wreaked havoc on the Gulf of Mexico for over three months will be completely sealed off by the end of August.
I suspect that this deadline will also mark the end of most people caring about offshore drilling, BP, the oil industry, or anyone who lives on the Gulf Coast.
We are a society afflicted by a global case of ADD.
An entire region of our country has been decimated by the corporate pursuits of a dying industry, and what were most people talking about on social media yesterday? Chelsea Clinton’s million-dollar wedding (yes, she’s vegan, no the wedding wasn’t).
I’m terrified to realize that while the real work to restore the Gulf has hardly begun, people have already drifted on to the next media blitz. That’s why today’s quotes focus on the importance of paying attention, observing the world around you, and taking action when the things you see insult your soul.
“You can become blind by seeing each day as a similar one. Each day is a different one, each day brings a miracle of its own. It’s just a matter of paying attention to this miracle.” -Paulo Coelho
“When we talk about understanding, surely it takes place only when the mind listens completely – the mind being your heart, your nerves, your ears- when you give your whole attention to it.” -Jiddu Krishnamurti
“Tell me to what you pay attention and I will tell you who you are.” -Jose Ortega y Gasset
“Choice of attention – to pay attention to this and ignore that – is to the inner life what choice of action is to the outer. In both cases, a man is responsible for his choice and must accept the consequences, whatever they may be.” -W. H. Auden

Great post Beth! Here is another one of faves, along similar lines:
“Human character evermore publishes itself. If you act, you show character; if you sit still, if you sleep, you show it. You think, because you have spoken nothing when others spoke…that your verdict is still expected. Far otherwise; your silence answers very loud.” -Ralph Waldo Emerson
